PORTUGAL – CLASSIC TOUR FROM LISBON
Travel Programme
Arrival in Lisbon and transfer to the hotel (transport only without guide/assistance in Italian). Free dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. Full day dedicated to visiting Portugal’s capital city and one of the most fascinating cities in Europe nestled on hills sloping towards the mouth of the Tagus.
In the morning, visit the Church of Santo Antonio, erected on the site of the house where the saint was born, Lisbon’s Romanesque cathedral and the Alfama district with its alleys, steps and squares. Much of this route is done on foot. Gourmet lunch with cod dishes at a restaurant in the Expo Park of Nations area. In the afternoon, continue the city tour, in particular the monumental area of Belém, from where ships set sail to discover Brazil and the maritime route to the Orient. They will observe the Belém Tower, an exotic fortress that has become
symbol of the city, the Monument to the Maritime Discoveries, and a visit to the interior of the Jerónimos Monastery (church and cloister), a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. Free dinner. Overnight stay in a hotel
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at leisure and free lunch. In the afternoon, excursion to SINTRA, a romantic village, a holiday resort of Portuguese royalty since the Middle Ages. Tour of the interior of its beautiful ROYAL PALACE, a labyrinthine building, a typical example of the architecture of the period
medieval and Manueline. We will continue to Cape da Roca, the westernmost tip of the European continent. The return to LISBON is made along the coast road, passing the famous seaside towns of Cascais and Estoril, where several European royals took up residence at the end of World War II. Return to the hotel
and overnight stay. Free dinner.
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for ÓBIDOS, a pretty fortified town surrounded by mighty walls from the 12th century, and a visit to the medieval village with its narrow, winding streets and white houses framed in yellow and blue. We continue to ALCOBAÇA, where we visit the famous monastery and the Gothic tombs of Pedro and Inês, who was queen after his death.
Continuation to NAZARÉ, Portugal’s most famous fishing village. Visit to the popular quarters and the Miracle site, from where there is a spectacular view of the Atlantic.
Time at leisure. Free lunch. In the afternoon,
Continue to BATALHA and visit its monastery, a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture. In the late afternoon, arrival at FÁTIMA and a brief visit to the Sanctuary built on the site where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in 1917, which today has become one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the Catholic world.

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for TOMAR to visit the Convent of Christ, one of Europe’s great monumental complexes, former seat of the Knights of the Temple in Portugal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continuation to COIMBRA, a pretty historical town. Visit its main monuments: University and its splendid Baroque library or Hall of Theses (subject to availability), the Cathedral (exterior only) and the interior of the Church of Santa Croce, which houses the Manueline tombs of the first two kings of Portugal, and was the place where St Anthony studied.
Free lunch. Continue on the motorway to
GUIMARÃES, a pretty town classified as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the first capital of the County of Portugal, where the first king of Portugal was born in the 12th century.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. The day begins with a visit to the historic centre of GUIMARÃES (walking tour) before setting off for the VALLE DEL DOURO, a beautiful wine-growing region whose landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit to a major winery: walk through the vineyards, tour of production and tasting – followed by a typical lunch from the region. In the late afternoon, before returning to the hotel, visit the Sanctuary of BOM JESUS in BRAGA, a Baroque masterpiece whose monumental staircase is one of the most famous views in Portugal.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. Early morning departure for OPORTO, the country’s second largest city and an active economic centre. You will visit the main points of interest: the beaches of Foz, the Douro docks and the medieval quarter of RIBEIRA (UNESCO World Heritage Site), with its narrow streets and colourful houses built against the ancient wall. A 50-minute cruise on the Douro River to admire the beautiful bridges, the oldest of which was designed by G. Eiffel. The morning ends with a visit to a prestigious port wine cellar with tastings. Lunch in a characteristic restaurant in the city centre after which you will take a short walk through the centre:

TRIP BACK TO LISBON, departure around 16:00 and arrival around 19:30. Free dinner.

EXTENSION TO ÉVORA, World Heritage City

Breakfast at the hotel. Regular full-day excursion to ÉVORA departing from your hotel with English-speaking guide. Visit this enchanting city and its major monuments including the Roman Temple and Gothic Cathedral and the macabre Chapel of Bones. Free meals. Overnight stay in a hotel in Lisbon.
